TaMaCo Pea Huller Points of Contact 


For all the features/gimmicks/hype, bean sheller machine performance comes down to one thing- POINTS OF CONTACT. This is where the pea huller opens the bounty and drops out the peas. Exactly how the pea pod is coaxed in to breaking open by these Points of Contact is a trade secret. What I can tell you is there are 99 Points of Contact on the TaMaCo Pea Shelling Machines, far more than any other commercial pea sheller on the market. Each of these Points of Contact are spaced apart for maximum efficiency. As you can see by the pictures it is hard for a pea pod to get through without making contact. This is crucial to maximizing yield! If you see a pea sheller with a wider gap, then there will be a drop in yield. Large or wide paddles are totally ineffective and even counterproductive as they end up bruising more peas than anything else. Points of Contact that are too far apart are also inefficient and reduce yield.

Aside from the simple locking latch that keeps small children from opening the large outer door, there is also a safety switch that shuts off the TaMaCo Pea Huller. Once again, this innovation just goes to show how much consideration goes into the building of one of these bean shelling machines.

Aside from these visible safety features there are more important ones that aren’t seen. Like the GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) reset switch should the TaMaCo Pea Sheller come into a close encounter with water or other dangerous shock hazards.



It’s What’s Inside?


The inside of the TaMaCo Pea Sheller is much more than an empty box. There are wires, electronics, and motors doing all kinds of little tasks to ensure the drum turns at the proper speed and protected from electrical surges. The TaMaCo pictured is the improved model of the original Model 500 TaMaCo pea hullers. This machine is designed for medium to heavy commercial use.To shell, just lift the huller lid and remove one drum door, dump the desired amount of peas or beans into the door opening, then replace the door and lid. Turn the timer on and minutes later you have pans of beautifully shelled peas or beans. The TaMaCo huller is a drum type sheller that comes with sizes “C” and “D” doors, “C” and “D” filter screens and an “A” catch screen. This will allow you to shell most varieties of peas and standard butterbeans. If your needs are to shell extremely small peas or larger than normal butterbeans, additional doors and filters are available.

TaMaCo Huller Explanations

DOORS: Doors are the 4 individual removable screens that makes up the Drum or cylinder.

  • DOOR SELECTIONS: Some operators find that when exceptionally large peas are mixed with their standard size peas of the same variety, they can use three standard doors for this variety, and one larger size door to let these larger peas fall through with a minimum of trash.
    Doors sets “B”, “C”, “D” and “E” have external removable shields. No external shields are necessary for “F” doors since these doors are used for shelling extremely large beans.
    “B” – For extra small peas (i.e., Lady Fingers, Turkey peas, etc.).
    “C” – For small peas to standard size peas (i.e., Black-eyes, Cream, Conch peas, etc.).
    “D” – For large peas (i.e. Purple hull, standard butterbeans, etc.).
    “E” – For large beans (i.e. Large limas, colored and speckled, etc.).
    “F” – For extra large beans (i.e. Ford Hooks, etc.).

CATCH: The catch is the bottom of the two screens on the shaker. This screen catches the peas and sends them to the receiving pan while allowing the smaller particle of trash and chips of hulls pass through to the trash pan.

  • CATCH SELECTIONS: There are two size catches available for these hullers. The “A” catch for use with most sizes peas and beans, such as Black-eye, Butterbean, Ford Hook, Etc., or the “AA” catch which is used only when the operator is shelling an extra small pea, such a turkey pea, Lady Finger Pea, etc.. Operation of an “A” catch with extra small peas would result in lost peas to the trash pan.
    “A” – For use with “C”, “D”, “E”, AND “F” doors.
    “AA” – For use with “B” doors only.

FILTER: A filter is the top removable screen on the shaker system that peas or beans pass through trapping the larger particles of unwanted trash or chips of hulls.

    • FILTER SELECTIONS: Selection of filter is important as they help keep the lager particles of trash out of the peas and beans that will pass through the filter screen. Only one filter is necessary to match each of the drum doors sets you have chosen, but if the peas or beans you are shelling will pass through a smaller filter than the door selection, it would be advisable to use this filter instead. Therefore, we suggest the purchase of an extra filter that is one size smaller than the smallest drum door set to give you a greater variety of filtering while shelling. “F” doors do not have external shields, so a shaker filter is not required when shelling with this set of doors.
      “A” – For use with “B” Doors.
      “B” – For use with “B” or “C” Doors.
      “C” – For use with “C” or “D” Doors.
      “D” – For use with “D” or “E” Doors.
      “E” – For use with “E” Doors.

SHAKER: The shaker is the lower vibrating device that holds the Filter and the catch for separating the trash and hull chips from the peas or beans.

Taylor “Mini” Pea Sheller


The Mini Sheller is a residential-to-small farm pea sheller machine for sale on a limited number of websites.  I’ve been looking over and testing an early production model in my office.  It is essentially a more affordable version of the light-commercial pea sheller, “The Little Sheller“.


The Mini Pea Sheller (pictured middle) is clearly larger than the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller (left) and about 2/3 the size of big brother, the Taylor Little Sheller (right). The hand crank Mr. Pea Sheller (in hand) is pictured just for completeness.   The Mini Sheller will fit in a closet or on a shelf in the garage with ease.

First impressions

The Mini Sheller is very well built.  The all aluminum frame will never rust.  The 1/10 HP motor provides plenty of power.  I was really glad to see the adjustable rollers. The most expensive part of this pea sheller is the motor, if it goes it may be time to consider getting a new machine.  Fortunately, Taylor uses a high quality-American made- 105 volt (standard three-prong household current) 1/10 hp motor that is fan-cooled with thermal protection. There is a lot in that last sentence, so let’s break it down:

  • Is 1/10 Horsepower enough?

1/10 horsepower is more than enough for a bean sheller machine of this size.  It will not bog down under the heaviest of loads, not even crowder peas or butter beans.

  • Fan Cooled

An internal fan pulls hot air away from the motor.  Since this pea sheller machine is expected to be worked outside in hot and humid temperatures, the internal fan should keep things humming along.  We tested it under a simulated moderate load for 16 hours straight without any trouble. For safety though, there is a thermal sensor that will temporarily shut off the motor to protect it from overheating.   I was unable to trip it in my test runs.  However, it should be noted that once the motor temperature drops to a safe level, the motor will restart automatically unless it is turned off or unplugged!   So, in the most unlikely event that it does shut off from overheating, please be sure to unplug it from the wall or turn it off! It is a 3 pronged plug. For those of who don’t know, the third prong is a ground to prevent a electrical shock or fire in case of a short-circuit.

  • Aluminum Frame

The frame is smaller than the Little Sheller which provides for a sturdier machine. The aluminum frame will not rust, so it will withstand humid temperatures. Below is a side by side comparison of the Mini (left) and Little (right) Pea Sheller.

All About The Rollerslittlepeashellerrollers

Most pea sheller rollers are designed to push the peas out the back of the pea pod.  The rollers on the Mini Sheller are specially designed to rip the hull down the seam and roll the peas out of the zipper.  This dramatically reduces bruising and increases yield. A lot of time and attention, trial-and-error, went into the material and texture of the Mini Sheller rollers.  If the material is too hard the rollers won’t grab the hull to pull them through, but if it is too soft, then the peas get mashed.  Texture, like tire trends, have a great deal to do with performance as well.  The speed of the rollers have been scientifically calculated for optimal yield as well.  If the rollers turn too fast the peas get mashed before they can safely exit the pod.  If the rollers are too slow, then the hull does not tear open and the peas get mashed.  This is just another example of the great detail that went into making this pea sheller machine. Unlike the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller, these rollers are easily adjustable for cow peas to butter beans.  It is recommended to make adjustments in 1/2 to 3/4 turn increments.


Safety First!

mini-pea-sheller-0010medThis is about as idiot-proof as a 50 year-old design is going to get.  There are 10’s of thousands of Little Sheller Pea machines in use, I’ve not heard of one serious accident.  Taylor really does give safety a high priority.  As with the Little Sheller, the Mini Sheller has metal guards on both sides of the rollers.  The guards are easy to put on and easy to adjust. There is also a belt guard which really stands out in the black plastic.  I like it much better than the metal belt guard on the Little Sheller.  Once installed it is unlikely that anyone would need to take it off as the belt will last decades even under heavy use. These guards are put into place to prevent any accidents involving belts and rollers.


Some people want an instruction book the size of a novel, but here is the breakdown of use in the simplest form:

  • Step 1. Set Mini Sheller on a sturdy table.
  • Step 2. Plug-in to 3-prong properly wired outlet.
  • Step 3. Turn on
  • Step 4. Push peas length-wise until rollers grab the pea hulls.
  • Step 5. Repeat step 4 until complete.
  • Step 6. Turn off Mini Sheller.
  • Step 7. Unplug Mini Sheller from outlet.
  • Step 8. Clean with damp rag.
  • Step 9. Store in a closet or sturdy shelf.

Electric Mr. Pea Sheller Review

Electric Mr. Pea Sheller (and bean sheller)

This is the base model for electric pea sheller machines. The Electric Mr. Pea Sheller is great for medium to larger gardens, or for those who just want a quicker way to shell peas. The Electric Mr Pea Sheller machine is very compact. In fact it could be said that it is a “coffee table pea shelling machine,” rather than a table top pea sheller. I have not done a side-by-side comparison test, but I’d say the comparatively small Electric Mr. Pea Sheller can do nearly as much as a Taylor Pea Sheller. Well, only because you can run only so many beans through by hand at a time. The Electric Mr. Pea Sheller is so compact it is easy to put away for storage until the next shelling season. The larger electric pea shellers are not easily put away. This pea sheller however, can simply be tucked away in the back of a closet and left until it needs to be used again. This is a huge advantage if you find you need a little more room in your work area.

Preparing Your Beans

Peas need to be fresh and green to work properly in the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller. Usually spreading the pea pods out on a sheet or blanket and leaving them for six to eight hours (or overnight if you can) will give the best results when shelling with the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller. Since the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller runs a lot faster than the hand crank Mr Pea Sheller, you will want to make sure the peas are properly prepared.

Electric Mr. Pea Sheller- No Assembly Required

The Electric Mr. Pea Sheller machine comes fully assembled. Just minutes after you get your Electric Pea Sheller machine home, you’ll be ready to shell. Take the sheller out of the box, plug it in, and you are ready to go!


The Electric Mr. Pea Sheller is very simple to operate. You simply spread the peas out in the slanted bin on top of the pea shelling machine. This slanted bed makes it easier to slide the peas in to the rollers. Once the peas reach the rollers they will be pulled through on their own. The peas will be deposited below the rollers in to a pan that comes with the machine (or your own pan that will fit in to the cubby hole). The pods will be ejected out the other end in a stack for easy clean up. The Electric Mr. Pea Sheller is designed to be operated by one person, and from our experience adding any more does not really improve performance.

Electric Pea Sheller Switch


Being made of Aluminum, the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller, is very sturdy and will not break down for a long time. It is not uncommon to find the electric motor inside the pea sheller will run for 20+ years before needing to be replaced. An improvement to the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller besides the aluminum construction is the on/off switch. This means the electric Mr. Pea Sheller can remain plugged in, yet not running, which is a huge improvement over the older versions which had to be unplugged to turn off. There is even a very quiet cooling fan inside the pea sheller to ensure the motor does not overheat. I also consider how quiet this electric pea sheller machine is compared to the larger pea shellers a huge advantage. I happen to have a dog that hates when I vacuum or any loud noises, running this pea sheller did not even cause him to lift his head.

Pea Sheller Rollers


One thing that has carried over from the previous version of the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller, and found on the hand turned Mr. Pea Sheller, is the rollers. The splined feature allows the rollers to self-adjust to the size of peas and add more torque as the pods pass through. This self-adjusting feature helps to open the side of the pods and allow the peas to pop free.


A few notes on safety with the new and improved Electric Mr. Pea Sheller. The electric motor for this pea sheller is completely enclosed inside the pea sheller. Meaning nothing can get caught on the belt that turns the rollers. The second major note on safety is the addition of a safety shield. Your hands can no longer get close enough to the rollers to get pinched by them. Safety was a large factor in the redesign of the pea sheller.


This sheller does not suffer from jamming that the smaller hand style sheller can, it will however mash more peas than the hand sheller does. As long as you properly prepared your peas, only a small portion of the peas should be mashed. If you have problems with a lot of peas being mashed by the pea sheller, letting your pea pods dry longer should reduce the problem. The large amount of green gunk and buildup on the rollers is the pea pod case, not the peas being mashed, be careful not to jump to that conclusion when you first see the rollers covered in green pieces. The hand guard for the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller does not prevent pea pods from going over the top of the rollers.  As pea pods are pushed down toward the rollers if they stack up, one on top of another, the ones on top have a tendency to go over the top of the rollers, meaning they are not shelled.  This can be prevented by simply rolling your hand back and forth over the pea pods, to make them all one level high, and then pushing them down toward the rollers.
